Ubuntu Philosophy

Ubuntu (Zulu pronunciation: [ùɓúntʼù]) is a Nguni Bantu term meaning "humanity". It is sometimes translated as "I am because we are" (also "I am because you are"), or "humanity towards others" ( Zulu umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu). In Xhosa, the latter term is used but is often meant in a more philosophical sense to mean "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity".

There are various definitions of the word "Ubuntu". The most recent definition was provided by the African Journal of Social Work (AJSW). The journal defined ubuntu as: A collection of values and practices that people of Africa or of African origin view as making people authentic human beings. While the nuances of these values and practices vary across different ethnic groups, they all point to one thing – an authentic individual human being is part of a larger and more significant relational, communal, societal, environmental and spiritual world.

As Principal Growth Partner and Managing Director of Ubuntu Ventures, Marlon oversees the day-to-day operations, leads our advisory services, and works closely with clients as a trusted growth partner. He supports entrepreneurs, teams, and businesses with strategic guidance, operational insight, and leadership development.

A lifelong learner and global citizen, Marlon is a seasoned entrepreneur who has walked the path of building and scaling ventures many times over. He is passionate about entrepreneurship, leadership, and strategy – and brings this firsthand experience to every partnership. Marlon thrives on mentoring and coaching others, empowering individuals and teams to unlock their full potential. He believes deeply that business can be a force for good, and that the entrepreneurial journey, while challenging, doesn’t have to be a lonely one.

Principal Portfolio Advisor

Monique leads deal analysis and portfolio management at Ubuntu Ventures, where she plays a critical role in evaluating investment opportunities and supporting portfolio growth. With a strategic mindset and strong analytical acumen, she helps identify high-potential ventures that align with Ubuntu’s values and mission. Monique supports engagement with portfolio companies to help scale their impact and drive sustainable growth. He enjoyed a career practising general commercial law, working with top tier firms and in-house before launching Kelly Hazell (as it was) in 2006. David and his co-founder had a clear vision for the type of firm they wanted KHQ to be. In pursuing that vision, KHQ has carved a niche in the legal market as a top-tier boutique law firm – they possess top tier talent, clients and expertise while retaining the characteristics of a boutique (nimble, efficient and cost effective).

Joshua Altit

Joshua Altit is the Head of Capital Markets and Execution at Cbus Super Fund (www.cbussuper.com.au).
With over 20 years of experience in global markets, he has held senior roles at leading institutions like UBS and Goldman Sachs, driving growth in Melbourne and Sydney.
